How to spot a responsible Cane Corso breeder
A great breeder is easy to recognize once you know what to look for. Use this checklist before you put down a deposit or drive to meet a litter — it works the same way in every state.
Green flags — what a good breeder does
- • Health-tests both parents: OFA or PennHIP hips, elbows, cardiac, and eyes (CAER) — and shows the results.
- • Provides a written contract with a health guarantee and a spay/neuter or return clause.
- • Asks you questions — about your home, schedule, experience with working breeds, and what happens if life changes.
- • Welcomes an in-person or video visit; puppies are raised in a clean home or kennel environment with the dam present.
- • Has a waitlist and takes deposits through traceable payment (bank transfer, Stripe, PayPal Goods & Services).
- • Stays available after you take the puppy home — they answer questions for the dog's whole life.
Red flags — walk away
- • "Rare color" markups, XL/XXL claims, or pressure to buy the last puppy today.
- • No health testing, or vague answers like "the vet checked them."
- • Wants payment by gift card, crypto, Zelle-only, or Western Union.
- • Won't let you meet the dam or see where the puppies were raised.
- • Ships puppies at 6–7 weeks, or has multiple litters ready at once, year-round.
- • No written contract, or a contract that shifts every risk onto you.
Questions to ask a breeder
- • "Can I see the OFA/PennHIP, cardiac, and eye results for both parents?"
- • "How many litters do you produce each year? How is the dam recovering?"
- • "What is your health guarantee, and what does it cover?"
- • "What happens if I can't keep the dog at any point in its life?"
- • "What temperament testing do you do on the puppies before placement?"
- • "What are you breeding for — show, sport, working, family companion?"
